Early F-8 main struts had a nasty habit of exploding on landing.  Via Jay Mille, VFP-63:

Had strut let go on Shang, RF-8 in 1969. Determined to be a Charlie strut that should not have been in ships inventory. Pulled about 50 feet of wire before wing down attitude
caused it to spit the wire. Result; another OK barricade
